Clash of Clans Magic Items Guide: Books, Hammers, Runes and Potions
How to get the most out of Clash of Clans magic items – when to use Books and Hammers, which upgrades deserve them, and how to time Runes and Potions.
Clash of ClansMagic Items Guide Magic items are some of the most valuable rewards in Clash of Clans. Used well, they save days or even weeks of builder and lab time. Used carelessly, they disappear on upgrades that would have finished overnight anyway.
The main types
| Item | What it does | Best used on |
|---|---|---|
| Books | Finish an upgrade that’s already in progress | The longest upgrades you’re currently running |
| Hammers | Complete an upgrade instantly | The most expensive, longest upgrades |
| Runes | Fill a resource storage | Before a big, expensive upgrade |
| Potions | Temporarily boost builders, research, resources or troops | Active play sessions and big pushes |
| Wall Rings | Upgrade wall segments | When builders are busy but resources pile up |
Always read an item’s description in-game – it tells you exactly which upgrades it covers.
Books
Books come in types: Building, Heroes, Fighting (troop research), Spells and Everything (any upgrade).
- Start the longest upgrade first, then use the Book on it.
- Don’t use Books on short timers.
- The Book of Everything is the most flexible – save it for whatever is slowest at the moment.
Hammers
Hammers are rarer and more powerful. Save them for:
- The most expensive building or hero upgrades at your Town Hall level.
- Upgrades that unlock something important, like a new troop or defence level.
- Research that takes the longest.
Runes
Runes fill your storages instantly. They’re most valuable when:
- Your storages are large, so a full refill is worth a lot.
- You need one big upgrade done now.
Holding a Rune until you’ve raised storage capacity gives you more value per Rune.
Potions
Potions shine when you can actively use them:
- Builder Potion – start several upgrades first, then pop it to speed them all up.
- Research Potion – use when a long research is running.
- Power Potion and Hero Potion – great for war attacks or Clan War League days.
- Training and Resource Potions – best during farming sessions.
Where magic items come from
- Clan Games rewards.
- The Gold Pass and events.
- The Clan War League shop – see our CWL guide.
- The Trader and Raid Medals from the Clan Capital – see our Clan Capital guide.
Common mistakes
- Using Books on short upgrades.
- Popping Builder Potions with only one builder working.
- Holding the maximum number of an item so new ones are wasted.
