Clash of Clans Base Building Basics: Compartments, Coverage and Traps

Design better Clash of Clans bases with a few core principles – compartments, centralised key buildings, splash coverage and smart trap placement.

Copying a base layout is easy. Understanding why it works is what lets you fix weaknesses after a bad defence. These principles apply at almost every Town Hall level.

Decide the base’s purpose

Base typeMain goal
War / CWL basePrevent three stars
Farming baseProtect resources
Trophy basePrevent stars and keep trophies

A base built for every goal at once usually does none of them well.

Compartments

Walls split your base into compartments. Good compartments:

  • Slow attackers down so defences get more time to shoot.
  • Separate key defences, so one spell can’t reach them all.
  • Avoid huge open spaces that ground troops walk through freely.

Centralise what matters most

  • Clan Castle – a central Clan Castle is harder to lure, which forces attackers to deal with defending troops mid-attack.
  • Air Defences – spread around the core so air attacks have to commit deep.
  • Your strongest defences – keep them out of easy reach from the edge.

Splash coverage

Splash defences like Wizard Towers, Bomb Towers and Mortars destroy groups of weak troops. Make sure:

  1. Every part of the base is covered by at least one splash defence.
  2. Splash defences overlap around your core.
  3. No splash defence sits alone on the edge, where it’s easy to remove early.

Trap placement

Traps work best where attackers’ troops are most likely to walk:

  • Between buildings in the funnel paths attackers create.
  • Near the core, where the main army ends up.
  • In gaps between compartments.

After each defence, watch the replay and move traps that never triggered.

Learn from replays

Every defence replay shows you something:

  • Where did troops enter?
  • Which defence fell first?
  • Did the Clan Castle troops get lured?

Adjust one thing at a time and watch the next few attacks.

Common mistakes

  • One huge compartment around the Town Hall.
  • Clan Castle on the edge.
  • Splash defences grouped together and easy to take out with one push.
  • Never moving traps.

Understanding these basics makes it far easier to improve any layout – including the ones you copy. Attackers will be using the funnelling techniques from our attack basics guide, so build to break them.
