AFK Arena Factions Explained: The Advantage Cycle and How to Use It
Lightbearers, Maulers, Wilders, Graveborn, Celestials, Hypogeans and Dimensionals – how AFK Arena factions counter each other and how to use that to win fights.
AFK ArenaFactions Explained Every hero in AFK Arena belongs to a faction. Factions decide who has the upper hand in a fight, which towers a hero can climb and which fodder you need for ascension. Understanding them is the cheapest power boost in the game.
The four main factions
The four core factions form a cycle. Each one is strong against the next:
| Faction | Strong against | Weak against |
|---|---|---|
| Lightbearers | Maulers | Graveborn |
| Maulers | Wilders | Lightbearers |
| Wilders | Graveborn | Maulers |
| Graveborn | Lightbearers | Wilders |
A hero attacking a faction it’s strong against deals bonus damage. That’s why swapping a single hero can change the outcome of a stage.
Celestials and Hypogeans
Celestials and Hypogeans sit outside the main cycle. They are strong against each other and are generally harder to obtain – usually through the Stargazer and special stores. Many of them are among the strongest heroes in the game, so treat every Celestial or Hypogean you get as a serious investment candidate.
Dimensionals
Dimensionals are special heroes – often from collaborations – that don’t follow the normal faction rules. They have no faction advantage or disadvantage, which makes them flexible picks for any team.
How to use factions in practice
- Check the enemy team before every hard stage. Look at which factions dominate.
- Swap in a counter. If the enemy is mostly Wilders, a Mauler damage dealer gets bonus damage on most targets.
- Avoid stacking heroes the enemy counters. Three Lightbearers against a Graveborn-heavy team is asking for trouble.
- Check the team bonus. Fielding several heroes of the same faction can unlock a team bonus – the team screen shows what you currently get.
Factions beyond combat
- Ascension fodder. Many ascension steps need heroes of the same faction as fodder – see our ascension guide.
- Faction towers. The King’s Tower has a separate tower per faction where only certain heroes can enter. Our King’s Tower guide explains how they work.
- Summoning. Faction scrolls summon heroes from one chosen faction, which helps fill weak factions.
Building a balanced roster
Long-term, aim to have at least one strong hero in every main faction. You don’t need complete teams of each, but having a counter available for any enemy line-up makes the campaign, towers and events much easier.
Factions are a small system with a big effect. Start checking them before every tough fight and you’ll be surprised how many “impossible” stages suddenly fall.
