Rise of Kingdoms Troop Types and Counters: Infantry, Cavalry, Archers and Siege
How Rise of Kingdoms troop types counter each other, what siege units are for, and how to build armies and choose fights based on the counter system.
Rise of KingdomsTroop Types and Counters Rise of Kingdoms has four troop types, and three of them form a counter triangle. Knowing it helps you choose fights you can win and avoid ones you can’t.
The counter triangle
| Troop type | Strong against | Weak against |
|---|---|---|
| Infantry | Cavalry | Archers |
| Cavalry | Archers | Infantry |
| Archers | Infantry | Cavalry |
An army with the advantage deals more damage and takes less, so a well-matched fight can be won against a bigger army.
Siege units
Siege units are specialised for attacking cities and structures. They’re less useful in open-field fights, but valuable when attacking fortified targets.
Building around one troop type
Most players focus their research, commanders and equipment on one main troop type:
- Research boosts specific troop types – see our research guide.
- Commanders often have talent trees for a single troop type – see our commander pairings guide.
- Equipment often focuses on one type – see our equipment guide.
Focusing makes every bonus stack. Mixed armies are possible with leadership-focused commanders, but specialisation is usually stronger.
Using counters in practice
- Scout the enemy before attacking.
- Send the counter type if you have it available.
- Avoid attacking an army that counters yours unless you’re much stronger.
Troop tiers
Higher troop tiers are much stronger than lower ones. Research and building upgrades unlock them – prioritise new tiers for your main troop type.
Common mistakes
- Training every troop type evenly.
- Attacking into your counter.
- Using siege in open-field fights.
The counter triangle is simple but powerful. Use it every time you fight and your losses will drop noticeably.
